A New Airport for South Bend
This project, set 50 years in future, is meant to create a new port city centered on a new airport and new train station for South Bend, IN. The new airport is set on the site of the existing airport and connects to a new train station, a mile directly south with a pedestrian-friendly boulevard between. The airport aims to bring more calm to the flying experience by separating the more hectic and "functional" aspects of the airport out into the bars at the north (the departure/arrival gates) and the south (check-in and baggage claim with a long loggia for pick-ups/drop-offs). The main octagonal atrium space in the middle would be where all the amenities are housed. The inner core would be a lounge/seating area, surrounded by a ring of shops/restaurants/cafés/etc. and then wrapped by a galleria with some seating. The idea is that the further from the center you get, the less pedestrian traffic you encounter and it can be a calmer experience on the perimeter. Ramps are utilized to maintain wheelchair accessibility while still achieving the level necessary to board the aircraft. The second level is meant to connect the building to the community and is accessible to people who are not flying. The space would contain offices, restaurants, shops, an event hall, and a terrace overlooking the runways.
